London Capital v Worcester Wolves
PAWS London Capital coach Steve Bucknall finally got the home win he had demanded as his side swept aside struggling Worcester Wolves at the Capital City Academy on Sunday. Wes Miller led the Capital with 31 points, including five three-pointers, and was backed up by 21 from Sam Bradley. It was those two that opened up a tight game as they each hit a pair of triples in the second quarter to extend what had been a 19-16 first quarter lead to 45-33 at the half.
The Wolves closed the gap at the start of the third stanza as Anthony Paez made 6 points in a 16-5 opening that made the score 49-50, but the Wolves couldn't edge in front. London closed the quarter with a 13-2 run that stretched the score back out to 63-51 and deflated the visitors.
The Wolves scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter, but the Capital went on a decisive 21-3 surge behind Miller, who had five of those, and Bradley, who sank a further pair of treys, to win the game
Poujoulat Guildford Heat v PLC
A fine performance at reigning champions Poujoulat Heat Guildford could not prevent Capital slipping to a narrow loss on Friday evening. A close opening to the game saw the lead change hands many times throughout the first half with neither side able to take control. Eight consecutive points from Daniel Gilbert midway through the second period saw the home side take the score out to 41-35, but the visitors responded to trim the deficit to just two points at 45-43 going into half time.
The second half saw the Heat begin to assert themselves on the game, and a 19-8 tear towards the end of the third period took the score out to 70-56 with 2.46 left in the period. The Heat held a twelve-point advantage at 76-64 going into the final stanza. The final quarter saw the visitors fight back, and tie the game at 79-79 with 5.26 left in the game off the back of a 15-3 burst. The Heat responded instantly, and five points from Michael Martin helped the home side enjoy a 7-0 tear to lead 86-79 with 3.59 left.
The Capital got to within three points at 91-88 with 1.21 remaining, but could get no closer as the Heat saw out the game from the free-throw line.
Gilbert led all scorers in the game netting 26 points for the Heat, while new signing Sa Bradley led the visiting scorers with 24 points personal. Ibrahim Gariba added 17, while the usually prolific Matt Miller was limited to 11.
